Tarot

Overview

The goal for this project was to design a mobile experience version, where someone new to tarot can do a self-reading using a 3-Card ‘Present, Past, & Future’ spread. Along with that Pixelberry company wanted to see the factors like the tarot card itself, references to the card meaning, the spread layout, and the position meaning.
This assignment seemed to start as a challenging task, so I conducted research and a survey with a professional tarot specialist, and all that helped me figure out the main flow structure, the specific card spreading, and prepare the assignment on time.

Problem

According to my research, people tend to turn to taro having different reasons and motivations:
- To have fun
- Relieve stress
- Profesional using

Project goals and objectives:
My main goals as a UX designer were:

  • Determine key features for the product

  • Create easy-to-use navigation

  • Integrate step by step instructions

  • Introduce playful tips

  • Catch users interest

  • Provide the user with the meaningful information

  • Interprete spreads accurately

  • Share with friends

  • Design a seamless and user-friendly interface

  • Define clear user flow

  • Organize functionalities

Research

Competitive research showed that on the market exist not a lot of tarot products (Trusted Tarot, Tarot Reading, Tarot Life, and Tarot app). I compared main competitors' features and has taken three steps further, by integrating:

  • Step by step instructions, that help users feel positive, self-assured on their using way

  • Create easy-to-use and comprehensible user flow

  • Create

  • Share tarot readings with friends function

  • Save spreads and make notes function

  • Support

The competitive research helped me to evaluate currents products on the market and see the gaps. This leads to users' pain points, especially among beginners. In this design exercise, I will try to resolve some of them.

Persona

After previous research and checking a Pixelberry company’s products I found the target audience to the following criteria:

  • Users between ages 14-46

  • Users who want practice easily doing readings

  • Users who own or have access to a smartphone

  • Users who feel comfortable using digital products

  • Users who want to get a free and easy-to-use app

Sketching Ideas/Wireframing

After competitive research and establishing Persona and User Flows I determined core project features. I incorporated fun and intuitive scrolling and tapping functions that would help users to reach their goals playfully.
I designed low-fidelity wireframes for the “Present, Past, Future” flow.

Mockups

At the end of this process, I delivered the mockups for all the flow pages of the app and created a clickable prototype.

Conclusion

It was a cool and exciting design exercise to work on! I've learned a lot about Tarot readings and applied my knowledge in various layers to improve the beginner user experience.

I've started with checking what is out there and compiling a mini competitive analysis regarding the reading Tarot cards. This helped me to identify a few areas for improvement.

On the UX side, I've reworked the terminology and shortened the flow to address the target audience of Tarot users. I've introduced a few tips and entry points to the helpful functionalities to support the beginner user. Additionally, I've created user-friendly navigation to guide the user through the process and the reading of the spread. On the UI side, I've used contemporary colors, animations, and gamification to make this experience more fun and engaging.

It was a great learning opportunity and an interesting design challenge to solve. Thank you for your time and consideration!"
